Nintendo has revealled sales figures following its November 19 launch of the Nintendo Wii. In the first eight days (leading up to yesterday), the system has sold 600,000 units.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess was the top game sold for the Wii, with 454,000 copies of the game sold to about 3/4 of the Wii purchasers.
Combining sales of Nintendo-published games and accessories, the Wii brought in $190 million U.S. from consumers.
"Even with sales already in excess of 600,000 units demand continues to exceed supply," said Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America. He also makes a reference to Sony's PS3 launch: "We've shipped retailers several times the amount of hardware the other company was able to deliver for its launch around the same time—and we still sold out."
The Nintendo Wii will launch in Japan on December 2 and in Europe on December 8. Nintendo will continue to send shipments to retail locations that are experiencing demand for the system throughout the rest of the year. Nintendo has re-affirmed its earlier commitment to ship 4 million Wii units worldwide by the end of the year.
Although the Nintendo Wii was designed to target a wider audience, brining more girls and adults into gaming, the first group most eager to own a Wii are the traditional gamers themselves.
