Release: June 1991
aka: Kids Gear (Japan)
The Sega Game Gear is essentially a portable version of the Sega Master System with different games. It has the same 8-bit processor as the SMS with, a 3.2 inch, full colour LCD screen. Sega designed the system to beat the Nintendo Game Boy and lead the handheld market.
The GameGear screen features a back-light. Something the GameBoy needs, but keeps its power consumpiton low. The GameBoy lasts around 35 hours on 4 AA batteries. (New models use 2). The Sega Game Gear uses 6 AAs, and lasts about 6 hours, the same problem that faced the Atari Lynx a year earlier. Battery packs and rechargable batteries were released for the Game Gear (see accessories below).
Ultimateley the Game Gear sold very well. It was popular among gamers but it never had the remarkable edge the Game Boy had.
