Nintendo Game & Watch

Game and Watch

Release: April 28, 1980

In 1889, Fusajiro Yamauchi began manufacturing 'Hanafuda' playing cards. For years the company progressed, the cards became popular in Japan and spread outside.

Jumping ahead about 60 years, it had become the "Nintendo Playing Card Company" in 1951. The cards were mass produced, and the company was well known to collectors and players. By 1963, they became Nintendo Co. Ltd. They were now also manufacturing games.

In 1980 Nintendo ventured into the realm of video games—a descision that sparked the creation of the Nintendo we now know today. It all started with little, monochromatic boxes. Nintendo, and the new Nintendo of America Inc. daughter company created the Game & Watch line of games. On April 28th, 1980, 'Ball', the first Game & Watch game was released.

The Game & Watch series took many forms. First was the Silver & Gold series. There were also widescreen, multi screen, tabletop (the only non handheld ones), panorama, super, crystal and micro vs. (muliplayer) series.
