Nintendo 3DS

Release: February 26, 2011 (Japan)
March 25, 2011 (Europe)
March 27, 2011 (North America)

The Nintendo 3DS is an updated version of the Nintendo DS dual-screen portable console. The console features a new steroscopic three-dimensional (3D) screen, as well as a new analog stick and a variety of new features.

Nintendo first announced that it was working on the Nintendo 3DS on March 23, 2010, but officially unveiled the device at E3 2010. It was released worldwide about a year later.

Nintendo 3DS Display

The larger top display of the Nintendo 3DS features 5:3 dimensions, and is capable of creating stereoscopic three-dimensional images without the need for glasses. The bottom screen maintains the previous 4:3 aspect ratio.

The three-dimensional effect of the top screen can be adjusted by a slider — either removed entirely or rendered more intense. Nintendo has announced that the screen will be used both for the 3D effect in games, but also in movies. Deals are being made with film distributors to release movies for the Nintendo 3DS.

Controls

The Nintendo 3DS features controls similar to those in the existing Nintendo DS, including the D-pad, gamepad buttons and touch screen, with some additions. The 3DS also features an analog input for finer controls, as well as a gyroscope and an accelerometer to capture motions. A microphone is also present for voice controls and chat functions.

Networking

Like the Nintendo DS, the 3DS will feature built-in Wi-Fi networking, and support local wireless and Internet multiplayer as well. The 3DS will also routinely seek out Wi-Fi hotspots and can connect to the Internet and other nearby DS consoles even while in sleep mode.

Cameras

The Nintendo 3DS features three individual cameras. There is a single camera on the inside, facing the user of the DS for video and for use by games. Two additional cameras are on the outside cover of the DS, which are used to combine their images to create stereoscopic 3D photos.

Nintendo 3DS Games

The Nintendo 3DS plays both Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi–specific games, as well as new 3DS-exclusive games. The following are some of the announced games:

  • Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy
