Nintendo Wii U

Release: 2012

The Nintendo Wii U, stylized as the Wiiu and pronounced "We, You", is the successor to the Nintendo Wii. The console was confirmed to be in development by Nintendo in April 2011, and revealed in June 2011 at E3. The system will be released sometime in 2012.

With the Wii, Nintendo produced a console that was technically inferior to the competing Xbox 360 and PS3, especially in terms of graphics and processing power. The goal with the Wii was to create a console focused on lighter gameplay that was accessible to a wide audience, drawing in players that are scared off by or uninterested in traditional consoles. Perhaps most notably, the Wii does not output video in high definition.

With the Wii U, Nintendo is instead creating a more technically sophisticated system, reportely featuring high-definition graphics, 8 GB of internal flash memory and a proprietary media format that uses 25 GB discs.

Nintendo confirmed that the console was in development on April 25, 2011, stating that it will launch sometime in 2012, no sooner than April, and that it will also be shown as a playable console at E3 on June 7–9, 2011. The console was originally known as Project Café, a codename used during development. It has also been called the "Wii 2" and "Wii HD" prior to its official unveiling. At E3 2011, Nintendo officially revealed the name, design and many details about the Nintendo U
