Sony PlayStation Vita

The Sony PlayStation Vita (PS Vita or PSV) is an upcoming handheld video game system from Sony. It is the successor to the Sony PSP.

Storage

Rather than an optical disc, the PS Vita will use a proprietary flash card formate called the NVG card. These cards are similar to SD memory cards, or the cards used by thte Nintendo DS.

Controls

The PS Vita features two analog sticks, along with the standard directional pad (D-pad) and the four triangle, circle, cross and square buttons that are featured on every PlayStation model. Two L and R shoulder buttons are located on the Vita's top edges.

As with the PlayStation 3 controller, SIXAXIS technology is used to allow motion-based control in the PS Vita. In addition, the back of the Vita is a touchpad, allowing an additional, unique control style.

Communication

The PS Vita features two cameras, one on the front of the unit, the other on the back. A headset jack and a built-in microphone are available for voice communication. A chat function will be available for players to communicate within and outside of games.

Connectivity

The PS Vita will be sold in two models: one featuring Wi-Fi connectivity for local wireless networks, and another featuring Wi-Fi and 3G technology to function on mobile networks. Bluetooth connectivity is also featured.

Vita—PSP Compatability

The PS Vita will be compatible with existing PlayStation Portable (PSP) games that are downloaded digitally via the PlayStation Network (PSN).

PS Vita Release

The PS Vita is due out in Japan by the end of 2011, and is expected to see worldwide release in the following year. The handheld was originally developed under the code-name Sony NGP.
