Release: May 11, 1995
The Sega Saturn and another system Sega Jupiter were simultaneously under development. Seeing that CDs were heading forward, The Saturn continued and the cartridge-based Jupiter was made into the 32X for the Genesis. The Saturn featured a 2× speed CD-ROM, 8 microprocessors and 2 graphics chips.
Sega raced to beat Sony to the market, and announced the Saturn for a September 2nd release. Sega finished a tad early, however, and released the system in May. A Saturn controller and the game Virtua Fighter were included. Third party developers, however, were all planning to release their Saturn games in September, so the library for this system was small until the fall.
Sega did well at first, but the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo64 took the market fast. The Sega Saturn soon fell under them.
An arcade-like Light-Gun.
This unit features a 28.8k modem for online gameplay and other features. A NetLink mouse or the controller can be used to operate an onscreen virtual keyboard for e-mail. Unfortunately the the Saturn could not save this data, so everything had to be read before the power was shut off.
