Japan Airlines offered the Mega-Jet, a semi-portable Mega-Drive (Genesis), system to their passengers for in-flight entertainment. Later, the system was released to Japanese consumers via retail.
In October 1995, the Sega Genesis Nomad, the first true 16-bit portable game system was released in North America. With a 3.25 inch colour LCD screen, an A/V out port and an AC adaptor plug, the Nomad was the superior in handhelds. The Nomad plays Genesis games.
The system resembles Sega's Game Gear, though slightly larger and boxier, with a directional pad and 6 buttons. The , SegaCD and Master System Converter were not compatible with the Nomad, nor were the AC Adaptors for the Sega CD or older Genesis models.
