[September 23, 2004] — Sony is releasing a sleek new design for its PlayStation 2 design. The new model is 75% smaller than the original, weighing in at 900g. As a space (and cost) saving feature, the CD loads in through a flip-up top rather than a mechanical drawer.

In addition to the new design, the new PS2 is also more functional. A built-in Ethernet port for both dial-up and broadband connections is built-in to the model—compared to the somewhat awkwardness of the original PS2 with a network attachment.

The new PS2 design will be released on November 1 in North America and November 3 in Japan. The North American model will cost $149 US.
