Apple's smartphone may yet emerge as a credible gaming platform

At the New York Comic Convention, news was released that Bethesda Softworks is currently working on a game for the iPhone. Todd Howard, who served as executive producer for Fallout 3, was there to confirm the news, but declined to comment further.

Naturally, no other details are known, but many wonder if the game falls under Bethesda properties like the recently revived Fallout or their famous The Elder Scrolls series.

The news is certainly good for Apple, whose iPhone and similar iPod Touch have been pushing their way into the gaming market. The device already has many casual games available, but has the capability to present more to gamers. Big name developers like Square Enix (who have released a Final Fantasy Tactics spin-off Crystal Defenders to the device) and now Bethesda paying attention to the iPhone certainly lends it some credibility.

Forum post reveals plans to bring classic puzzle title to Apple's mobile device

According to a post on the Myst Online forums, the development team over at Cyan is working on “iMyst”, a port of the original Myst for the iPhone. The post has this to say:

We are porting Myst to the iPhone. Ok, before some of you start groaning, this is an outside funded project that is keeping a few developers employed… but it is really more than that. It is an interesting and fun project. This is also a very small team with three of us.

The touch-screen will probably work well for this type of point-click puzzle game. As an iPhone owner I welcome it. It might be a welcome distraction for me <del datetime="2008-08-22T18:00:17+00:00">during</del> between University classes this year. It’s also a nice change of pace for iPhone games, adding more variety into the mix.
